After reading both an excerpt from Luis Rodriguez’s Always Running and his poem “Race Politics,” I would recommend that you read his excerpt, which discusses how part of coming of age is understanding that your older relatives are more complicated than you think. Rodriguez does a great job using diction to convey this theme when he writes, “They finally let my brother go and he slid to the ground, like a rotten banana squeezed out of its peeling” (Paragraph 7). By comparing his brother to a banana falling out of its peel, Rodriguez shows that even his older brother has weaknesses. Rodriguez also uses syntax effectively when he writes, “Swear—you got to swear—you’ll never tell anybody how I cried” (Paragraph 9). By using dashes, Rodriguez shows how desperate his brother is, and he is realizing that his brother can show emotion too. I liked the poem too, which talks about how Rodriguez comes of age by encountering racism. Rodriguez uses diction in the poem to discuss racism: “There we were, two Mexicans, / six and nine—from Watts no less. / Oh, this was plenty reason / to hate us” (Lines 39-42). Rodriguez describes how he and his brother experienced hatred because they were Mexican. Overall, I thought the excerpt was more powerful because it helped me to see that coming of age means acknowledging that even people older than me have struggles.
